my question is simply can i keep 1 male betta in a tank with a school of neon tetras?

I've heard that bettas can do pretty well with neon tetras, as that's what I was thinking about doing. I don't know first hand how well that combination is, though. How big is your tank and how many neons do you have?

well i haven't actually bought anything yet, but i wanted to make sure i could put them together. thinking maybe a 3 gallon or so.

I'd get a bigger tank if you want to keep a betta and other fish--a 10g is usually around the same price or cheeper then the smaller tanks (I don't know why but it is) I'd put it in a ten gallon and try and see if it works--I've heard it depends on the individual temperments of the fish.

you need a ten gallon, you could put,
6 neon tetras
1 betta
or if you tank is wide,
8 pygmy cory cats
1 betta
i would go with the second choice, bettas are normally top dwellers, cories are bottom, there would probably be less agression than neontetras,my tetras used to pick on my bettas fins.you would need to add plants(live preferably).

right, as everyone has said 3 g is too small for a school of tetras AND a betta. You could barely get away with a lone betta in a tank that small. It would require weekly or twice weekly water changes just with the one fish.

As for compatibility of male bettas with other fish, it's a crapshoot. Several folks on this forum have friendly male Betta splendens who do great in community tanks. Others have had fish killed by their betta. Mine have always been too aggressive. They end up chasing my peaceful fish and guarding any scrap of food like an angry dog! Luckily, I noticed this behavior before it got to the point of another fish's death. So I'm not going to try putting male bettas in with other fish ever again.

My advice to you is: get at least a 10 gal tank. Then try putting a betta in there, but watch him very closely for the first few days. Be prepared to separate him if need be, either with a tank divider or another tank. The tank divider may not be the best solution, because I've also had hyper-aggressive fish hurt themselves on it just from sheer rage that he could see the other fish but couldn't get at them.
