algae killing chemicals which claim to be "fish and plant safe", probably aren't. but, generally, they won't kill your fish and plants right off the bat. they generally warn not to use these chemicals in tanks with "crustaceans". well, snails aren't crustaceans, but after half the recomended dose in my tank, my apple snail kicked the bucket.
if you can avoid using chemicals, do. if you have snails and you tank is being overrun by algae, give your snails away before using a chemical.
