Alright... I have several questions and a couple ideas as well, so bear with me....
1. Does anybody have a bichir in an amphibious (possessing both water and land elements) tank? And if so, does it venture above the water (since it CAN breath air). Or maybe see it go after prey that is just above the surface of the water... that'd be sweet!
2. I really like the idea of having more than just fish in my tank. You know, more like having a real ecosystem rather than just a "fish tank." I was wondering if you could have those little 1" fiddler crabs (seen them at Petsmart, Petco, etc) to the tank. I understand that the bichir would most likely eat them eventually, but that's a non-factor to me (that is, unless they could kill the bichir) in an amphibious tank? What tank mates would you put in there with it (I'm not looking for fish tankmates for ideas... unless you have a really unique, fun fish in mind... but mostly others (snails, crabs, shrimp, crayfish, etc.)
3. My senagal bichir swims around ALOT. Would having less room for him to swim around by including BOTH structure/land elements have a detrimental effect on his health?
To kind of outline what I'm thinking of, what I want to do is get a 75/90 gallon tank, then put a bunch of structure inside it, both on the bottom as well as on the top. My rationale for this is that the bichir would still have plenty of room to swim around mid to top of the tank, while still be able to slither through the little passageways of wood and stones at the bottom, while having sections where the current would still be fairly strong (along the front of the tank and probably the top (for the top-dwelling fish). Not to mention, I think this cover would provide a great source of shade and provide hiding places for smaller mid to bottom dwelling fish. My thought is that I would probably maintain the tanks water level at about 2/3 of total capacity.
Has anybody ever done anything like this before? If so, could you post pics? The idea is really exciting to me....
