Alright... I have several questions and a couple ideas as well, so bear with me....

1. Does anybody have a bichir in an amphibious (possessing both water and land elements) tank? And if so, does it venture above the water (since it CAN breath air). Or maybe see it go after prey that is just above the surface of the water... that'd be sweet!

2. I really like the idea of having more than just fish in my tank. You know, more like having a real ecosystem rather than just a "fish tank." I was wondering if you could have those little 1" fiddler crabs (seen them at Petsmart, Petco, etc) to the tank. I understand that the bichir would most likely eat them eventually, but that's a non-factor to me (that is, unless they could kill the bichir) in an amphibious tank? What tank mates would you put in there with it (I'm not looking for fish tankmates for ideas... unless you have a really unique, fun fish in mind... but mostly others (snails, crabs, shrimp, crayfish, etc.)

3. My senagal bichir swims around ALOT. Would having less room for him to swim around by including BOTH structure/land elements have a detrimental effect on his health?

To kind of outline what I'm thinking of, what I want to do is get a 75/90 gallon tank, then put a bunch of structure inside it, both on the bottom as well as on the top. My rationale for this is that the bichir would still have plenty of room to swim around mid to top of the tank, while still be able to slither through the little passageways of wood and stones at the bottom, while having sections where the current would still be fairly strong (along the front of the tank and probably the top (for the top-dwelling fish). Not to mention, I think this cover would provide a great source of shade and provide hiding places for smaller mid to bottom dwelling fish. My thought is that I would probably maintain the tanks water level at about 2/3 of total capacity.

Has anybody ever done anything like this before? If so, could you post pics? The idea is really exciting to me....

Sounds pretty awesome, don't know if its plausible but sounds good.

1.Bichirs only leave the water for short distances as a survival instinct not to hunt.
1a.Bichirs eyesight is not that good to pick off flying objects
2.minimum sized fish tankmates will need to be a minimum of 4'' long and fairly deep bodied, avoid things with claws, shrimp will be eaten as will frogs
3.you'll need an area at least 36''Lx18''Wx8''water depth-Anne

Yup sure does-Anne

Awesome... thanks for the input! I'm also thinking about putting other things in there, but I will always keep in mind that the bichir would/could possibly eat them. And as for the substrate... I gotta be honest... I think I'm done with sand. Just too hard to take care of. What I'd probably end up doing is going with gravel, an UG filter, and a powerjet or two to create a good current. I'll have plenty of cover, structure, and little holes in which to generate breaks for the bichir and other bottom dwellers to hang out in so they don't have to swim all of the time...

what is this "sounds alot like somebody?" are you making fun of me? lol...

yeah just remember that the bichirs are naturally bottom dwelling to keep that in mind so don't take too much of their natural space away! and yeah sounds like a great idea and I hope you post some pics when its all set up!

oh and the reason others have posted to stay away from crabs, or anything with spines is in the best interest of the bichir so the spines/claws don't tear him up as he digests.

and for a fun fishtank mate idea, how about a black ghost knife fish? I have one with my bichir and they look awesome together.

good luck with the tank setup!

i wouldnt put the crabs in..... id go with a 90 gallon tank for extra depth... i have a ornate with a turtle and they do fine i had some sens in with it and they would dart till they hit the side of the tank when ever they saw the turtle or the turtle dives off the land spot...... so i took them out and sold them... my ornate is the only one left and couldnt careless about the turtle except when the turtle will try to steal the bichirs food then the ornate will bite at it.... ive only seen my ornate beach him self once and that was chaseing a cricket that was swiming away from the turtle..... Id go with frogs if u get anything with fish......
