Just saw that the Big Al's 300w submersible went on sale and am looking for a bigger heater. Question; does anyone have good, bad or just plain ugly experience with this product?

I got one of Big's hang on heaters to try. I was not happy and it has been on a shelf since a couple of weeks after I got it. On the other hand I was pleasantly surprised by the following low priced heater I got from kensfish:
The Guardian heater is fully submersible and indestructible. The Guardian was designed to successfully pass 12 rigorous safety tests. This is a very safe choice for your fish. Listed below are the 12 reasons why.

1. Dropped 3 times from a height of 3 feet onto a hardwood sureface - No unsafe results.
2. Line Cord - Withstands 35 ponds of pulling force without components disassembling.
3. Line Cord - Heavy duty exceeds rated heater voltage & waterproof.
4. Thermal Protector - Resettable switch cuts off power if temperature exceeds 185 degrees out of water.
5. Double Insulated - No current leakage.
6. Was submersed in water, after reaching maximum heat - With no dielectric or physical damage.
7. Plastic parts flammability test - Won't Support combustion.
8. Metals and connectors mechanical - not soldered.
9. No glowing or flaming at highest temperature with heater out of water.
10. Dielectric tests - 2,500 volts with no insulation breakdown.
11 Heat aging - All elastometric seal materials heated to 212 degrees for 70 hours - No problem of hardness or flexibility.
12. Production line testing - Every heater is tested in production.

I was satified enough to buy a second one.

I have two of the big als 50w heaters that I bought for emergency's @ $5.00 +/- how bad could they be.

I put them on my 40B tank till my other heaters came in they have kept a steady temp for 2 months now. I never changed the heaters because they were working so well.

Heaters like any thing else is hit or miss bad ones come off every production line.

I had a Rena 150 that lasted one month then temp would fluctuate now its in a landfill somewhere (no I recycled it)

I did that too cuz they were cheap, thought how bad could it be? Nice link TTA! Now when I need a spare tow chain I can just order one of those! :D 2nd Mgamer on not going cheap with heaters. Also 2nd Squawkbert's tough to go wrong with a stealth comment.
