Big dreams . . . small space

:help: I recently retired, and want to set up a marine aquarium. My biggest problem is that I live in a townhouse and space is limited. Ideally, I need an aquarium that is no longer than 30 inches. Height and depth are not critical issues. I saw one unit made by Oceanic in their Contrast Series called a 40 gallon Stretch Hex. I am wondering if anyone knows of a 30 inch long rectangle or bowfront that might be 46 or 50 gallons? Any advice would be welcome. I plan to do a fish only set up with live rock.

Hi, happy retirement!

There's a lot of variety for the size you're interested in. They come in all shapes (including and especially bowfront) and you can have both acrylic and glass bowfronts. If you go the acrylic route and want to design your own tank, that's also possible.

Places like your local fish store, might/should have a 40-60 gallon bowfront or rectangle for you that are 30" because they can play around with the depth and height of the tank. Be aware that since you're going with fish only and live rock the emphasis is on the fish, and a taller tank will take more water movement on the surface in order to oxygenate the water for the fish. Because it's saltwater, it can't hold as much oxygen, so it comes to a balance between more water volume equalling more stability and a higher tank restricting O2... Also, the corporate pet stores like petco or petsmart may have these tanks at better prices because of their buying power.

Hope this helps!
