Big fish at an LFS.

In Saint Paul, MN, Como Zoo (it's free!) has a new permanent "rainforest" exhibit. It has a huge tank that clearly houses the outgrown fish donated by whomever. Pacus, Arrowanas, redtail cats, tinfoil barbs and a few others. They are freaking large fish. I don't think they will be accepting more fish donations anytime soon.

Yeah, my local lfs has a tank with a giant gourami in it. That fish is HUGE!
I keep a tape measure ready at the Petsmart where I work so I can show people how big plecos, oscars, tinfoil barbs, pacus and even ghost knives get. They finally understand when I hold the tapemeasure up against the tank in front of the fish they are considering. Duh.

Other end of the scale - nice betta tank...proper sized...and some comment about how they really really do not 'prefer' to be in pint glass tanks.

Back on topic lol, Bala Sharks.

At my lfs they have a 300 gallon with about 5 8'' Jardini Arowanas, 5 12'' Silver Arowanas, and about 12 12'' redhooks and pacus. Those poor fish hardly have no room to swim. I broke down and got myself a jardini. See my thread for pics.

The one thing about having a large display tank like this with HUGE MONSTER's in them is that people see it and think, "wow look at how big those get thats awesome" or that may be "SAVING THE FISH" when they are not doing anything better for it in their care.....then they end up buying all their smaller counterparts raising them in inadequate conditions and once they hit a size which they cant handle anymore they give them up or worse dump them into a public waterway......

i think it would be a good idea to print up some life size pictures of full grown clown loaches, pacu's, monster cats, oscars, ect. to hang on the wall near the area where they are sold so people will actually see how big they get before buying. i think this would be more effective than just saying that the fish will get really big.

kinda off topic, was at one of the LFS yesterday and saw an oscar in something around 8 gallons, so sad. I don't think he could even turn around in the tank...

That would be a good idea. to have full size pics of the fish with a little lable giving proper care requirements. sorta like what petco tries to do but with accurate information.
