Hi, I have a relatively new 29 gallon (tall) tank, finished cycling, with 3 glass catfish, 8 neon tetras, 3 guppies, and a kuhlii loach, along with a few small snails and clams. I was wondering what else I could put in that would be a little larger? I'd love something like a discus but I think the tank would be too small, and he'd probably eat my neons anyway. A larger gourami would be nice too except that all of the big ones seem to be kind of boring looking. Is there anything that would be big and flashy but not aggressive and would not eat my other fish? Thanks!

trya red tail, OR a nice roseline would be cool. they look exterely colourful and will give the tank that "flash" effect. I was going to get one for my 30 BUT I dont have 25$CDN to dish out right now. they cost a little morethen neons, but they are definaly worth it. Dont bother with discus, to hard the water has to be PERFECT at all times. Many discus owners run no graval at all just to keep the tank clean and do bi-dailiy or even daily water changes ! :coffee2:

Don't forget that adding a new fish will start a mini cycle as the bacteria has to catch up to the new ammonia load. So be diligent with water changes.

Also realize that khulie loaches do best in larger groups and will be a more exciting fish.

And those fresh water clams will die off and create a big mess in your tank. I have yet to hear from someone that kept them alive for more tahna month. And when they die they do so hidden away. So be prepared for that.

I agree, the loaches should be kept in groups of at least 3. Also, don't glass catfish get to be rather large, up to 6"?

The first aquarium I ever kept was 29 gallon... there aren't really any fish that I consider to be large that can stay in that size for long...
You could get a small to medium sized Sevrum and manage to keep him there for a year or so before he gets too big. I think gold sevrums are beautiful fish. They're also very docile and leave the small fish alone. At least mine do, anyway.

Glass catfish grow to around 3".

Rainbow fish seems like a good idea. They only grow to 9-11 centimeters.

You could also get some exotic cat fish, like a banjo cat. Or a pearl gourami.
