Big move this friday and am NERVOUS!!!

I move this friday to my new house... I am so nervous about droping the 55 gallon.. The 15 gallon shouldn't be that bad...

I just don't want to do anything wrong transporting over $200.oo in cichlids to my house...

I am only moving 6 blocks away but not sure how to approach this...

Buckets or bags? Tubs?

Also when I refill the tank, and adjust them to the water am scared I am going to loose a few... How would one do this move?

Fish can survive pretty well in a bag fill with air (up to 3 hours). I bought many fish acrossed the town that's 1 1/2 from my home...and went through all bumpy subway ride. They were all fine still when I got them home.

Since you are doing a 6 blocks move...I don't think you will have problem moving the fish. The most important thing is to have your tank setup and ready for your fish.
 
When moving fish and tanks, I use Rubbermaid tubs with lids (20 gallon size). Two such tubs would let you move the fish from your 55, along with enough water to keep them from being shocked at the transfer. A third tub will hold gravel and decorations. Just don't overfill the tubs (50% or so is best)...when you move them they are going to slosh, and you don't want anything going over the side.
 
Off the subject a little, sorry... but peifc, what LFS do you use? I'm also in NYC, always looking for another store.
 
I go to the the Flushing fish store, own by Chinese guy...on Main St. That place is great. They help me a lot. And they answer my questions...help me find the fish I need. They have great African Cichlids there too. Their fish tanks are always clean and fish are all healthy. All the fish I bought from them...none of them ever got ich.

Another LFS I went to is in Brooklyn...on 86th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenue. The people in there are great help as well.

I went to this LFS just once, in Brooklyn, around Flatbush area. That fish store...my gosh...never seen that many kinds of fish. They sell all sizes of tanks and stands (saw one 225 gallons tank). They have salt water shark to fresh water fish. They even have red belly piranhas. They have cichlids. Found many cichlids that I can't find in many stores.

Another LFS in Brooklyn I'm planning to go. That place is call Brooklyn Zoo & Aquarium. I heard that place is amazing as well...with all varieties of fish.

I'm also always looking for new LFS here. And they have to have great service and fish got to be healthy.

Never...I mean...never ever go to Petsland if you can avoid it. They never take cares of fish. All the fish I got from that place...they always died of mysterious disease or always sick.
 
Wow those all sounds really good. I mostly stick in Manhattan (no car) and go to New World Aquariums, they're on 37th or 38th(?) btwn 2nd & 3rd. Really knowledgeable help (ask for Oliver), healthy fish (haven't had a problem yet) and a fair selection of cichlids. I've been happy with them, but am looking for a few more options of fish. Maybee I'll make a run out to one of your stores. Many thanks for the info.
 
You don't need car to get to those places...

You can take subway.

Flushing Main Street, you can take 7 train to Main St. The store name is Tropical Island Pets.

In Brooklyn, on 86th Street, you can take R train to 86th St. The store is A World of Pets.

Brooklyn Zoo & Aquarium, you can take 2 or 5 train to the last top. It is located on Ralph Avenue.

The one on Flatbush Avenue, you can take 2 or 5 train to the last top. The store is World Class Aquarium.

I just moved a month ago and I did a 99% water change on my 75g and every single fish survived....of course I dont have 200 worth of fish, so it might be a little more concern for you....
