Well, I bought the balloon bellied molly while it was pregnant so I can't be sure of the father, but I am pretty positive it was a balloon as well because I saw many orange and black balloon bellied males in there with the females and the tank was only balloon bellied mollies.
You can breed ANY kind of molly together, balloon with lyretail, sailfin with regular...etc. However, doing so, may be risky as they continue breeding. EX. A litter of babies from a lyretail and balloon will probably be just fine, but as the continue mixing, that litter with sailfin, and those with balloon and so on...The babies will start being born deformed or with problems, which is why most breeders intend to try and keep them pure breed.
