Biggest HOB on 10g?

Using a filter rated at 200 gph in a 10 gallon tank, I would stay away from any long finned fish(guppies, bettas angelfish). Loaches and most minnow-like fish(barbs, danios) would probably love the tank.

Personally I would never have an HOB on one of my tanks becasue for their size and performance the room they take up on the tank as a mechanical filter is not worth it IMO, however as a nitrate filter that houses terrestrial plants they are quite marvelous so I have one on every thank just for that specific reason with no filter cartridges.

I did however as a Christmas gift to my sister and her autistic son give and set up a 60 acrylic tank, set up for cold water fish for simplicity and denitrification log to keep nitrates down to a minimum, also 2 Aquatech 60 HOB's for elementary level filter maintenance. Now all she has to do is add treated water for the next few months until I get up there to do a water change and change out a new fresh log so that the bacteria that brake it down cane continue denitrification keeping nitrates at about 5 PPM.

Good filtration is not about the volume and speed that you can blast water through the filter media - in fact, you're far better off with less flow and very fine filtering media. An AquaClear 20 would be plenty of filter for a 10g tank. Use the sponge, some filter floss or fine pad and the bio-max and it should work very well for you.

I'm sure the OP has purchased a filter by now. ;)
