I've been an Aquarium Keeper since I was 12 years old. That was 62 Years ago. In most Cases, been there, done that.
I included Marine about 10 Years ago. Didn't start with Fish only. Jumped directly into Reef keeping.
In that Period, I have collected quite a series of Books. Mostly Marine of course as it seems to be a more complicated venue. As You know in this period methods of maintaining a Reef have changed and very diverse opinions still prevail.
I recently accepted an Offer that was to Good to refuse, as the Godfather says. I am the new Owner in Partnership with My Daughter of a 90 gallon Tank, Stand, Lighting Hood, Wet/Dry sump filter and Protien Skimmer.
We were absolutely delighted with Our 55 Gallon Reef. The Fish and Critters were Thriving.
Now to the question: All this reading has convinced Me that the Berlin System is adequate for the Total filtration needs of a Living Reef. My Daughter says don't mess with Success. Stick to the Method We are using now. This includes that living Sand Stuff as Substrate. I contend that this will enhance Nitrate production and this is not so good for the Hard Coral. I have found that some of the soft Corals seemed to thrive on the higher Nitrate level. Especially the Green Star Polyps and finger Coral. That does not apply to other Corals. When I reduce the nitrate level, they begin to light up and those softer corals seem to subdue.
What say You, Fellow Reef keepers?
