Ok, I'm not sure if this issue has been addressed because I really didn't want to go through the whole forum. What is the deal with bio-balls, I've seen them at a lot of fish stores and I was just wondering what they do and if they work. To me it just looks like a bunch of plastic toys floating around at the top of the aquarium, but maybe I'm wrong.

bio balls supply surface area for beneficial bacteria to bond to.

yes they work..they are designed for wet/dry sump filters.

yup,,that's a sump..
sumps creat large bio media areas..usually they are used in larger tanks. mine is on a 75 the sump is large enough for a bigger tank. the sump itself adds 5 more gallons of water.

for HOB you can find the ceramic media..that stuff is suppose to have a larger surface area for bacteria..

Did you just put them in the aquarium and they are floating around?
