Bio filteration in a power filter?

Has anyone had success tossing in some ceramic rings or bio balls into a power filter? I just had a bacterial bloom from replacing a ragged old filter cartridge. I have a bio wheel but it clearly isn't colonized enough to handle a cartridge change. I'd like to just toss some rings in as backup for next cartridge change. Thanks in advance.

I have not tried them but I use cell pore bio media I get it from drsfostersmith.com I personally would not use anything else.

What I do is when I know its coming close time to change the cartridge, I take the new one, place it behind the old one and leave both in for a week. Then when I take the old one out, I rub the filters together and squeeze the water from the old one onto the new one. Sounds strange but works...

you will probabally never have to change the cell pore cartridge. I have never changed mine.

I think its a steal you can get it in a variety of applications for almost any filter type too.

Thanks a bunch. Funny, I was just checking out that cell pore stuff a few minutes ago. I'm looking at Nitrex too. I also plan to stuff some peat in my filter. Thanks again.

I have done it just put them in a used nylon and tied it off and put it behind the filter cartridge. Works good for me but I like the looks of those bio blocks form drs foster smith listed above.
