bio spira discontinued

this is really ashame. There are a few local fish stores that had them in stock still. I purchased a pack and i am storing it in my fridge for emergency cycling ...

(crying) sniff sniff :(

hopefully the new stuff from dr tim will work just as good and he can get it out to people who want it

:read: I'm not surprised in the least. I posted recently in reply to one member:

Be aware that the effectiveness of this product is highly dependent on proper 'handling' throughout the entire chain of transport. Temp. maint. is critical (mfgr. to shipper to wholesaler to shipper to retailer to shipper to you) Deviation could result in partial or complete destruction of the bacterial contents. "T"

Quote:
Warning someone that the effectiveness of the product is dependent on proper handling assumes that it has not been handled properly, and there's really no way a buyer could avoid such an unlikely situation so there's really no point in doing so.

I beg to differ. A little over 5yrs. ago (before this product became the 'rave' that it is now), Marineland only sold to a very limited & exclusive market of retailers. Most sales were direct (MarineLand to shipper to you). This minimized the risk of product damage. My first purchase yielded excellent results. (direct from MarineLand) It also limited the marketability of the product. Things have changed since Spectrum Brands acquired United Pet Group (former parent co.) Now, every & any local shop, chain outfit, on-line retailer ect. can carry the product as long as they assure MarineLand they have adequate refridgeration. This maximizes the risk of product damage!! All sources for purchase are not equal!! There are numerous complaints of disatisfaction by customers & although some of it stems from not following directions, the greater majority is due to what MarineLand refers to as "improper handling of the product in the chain of transport". $17/20 + overnite shipping in some cases, is a lot of money for a pouch of dead bacteria. So YES, there is a point, "LET THE BUYER BEWARE" !!

Am I the only one that can't read this? Antway, I just stocked up on a couple of packets for future use....My LFS didn't know about the discontinuation.

I just never understood this product...

Even IF the product is handled properly, stored properly, and taking into account that you have live cultures (thus a very finite shelf/life-span), why take all these chances, which cannot be determined until used (or attempted) and pay $15-20+ !?!?!

All one needs ot do is go to their LFS and pay $4 for a cultured sponge/filter media pulled directly out of their tank and drive home. Works 100% of the time!

:Boggle:

No fish stores around here sell sponges. Of course they don't sell bio-spira either. Joining a good local club is the best idea but then again it isn't something newbies will do (usually).

I'll definitely agree that in the beginning misuse was the primary cause of failure for the product. Since then however, the 'handling' before it gets to you took precedent. Not real sure about that room temp. storage H3D. Check it.....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Shake well before each use. Use 1 ounce (29.6 ml) of BIO-Spira per 30 gallons of water. BIO-Spira cannot be overdosed. Keep refrigerated. Be sure to shut off any UV sterilizers and remove medication by means of a water change or activated carbon.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PRINCIPLE INGREDIENTS: Purified water, patented and patent pending pure strains of Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira and Nitrospira.

IMPORTANT: BIO-Spira is a "live" bacteria culture that is sold refrigerated and must be kept refrigerated until used. It can not be overdosed. Repeated dosing of your aquarium with ammonia removing liquids (such as BIO-Safe, Amquel, Ammo-lock and Aqua-Safe) can inhibit the beneficial action of BIO-Spira. Ammonia removing liquids should only be used to initially treat tap water. It is normal to have a small (<2 ppm) amount of ammonia or nitrate during the first few days after set-up. These concentrations are not harmful and will quickly drop to zero with proper use of BIO-Spira.

Thats the problem w/ transport & storage before you even get to try it. The effectiveness of the product can be compromised either partially or completely. "T"

It 'should' be kept refrigerated because it doubles the lifespan of the product from about 6 months to a year, however it could always be stored warm. Although many of you may not remember this, the product was actually first released in a bottle that could be found warm with the rest of the water conditioners. The first time I used Bio-Spira it was a free sample given inside the box with the Penguin Bio-Wheel filter I purchased. It was stored there warm for who knows how long and worked amazingly.

i can just imagine you driving home from the store, new filter in the front seat next to you, happily listening to your 8-track. . . . . oh how times have changed.

I'm so sad, biospira has worked for me! Does anyone know how long I can keep biospira refrigerated? I'm going to call my favorite store that carries it ASAP to see if they still have any. I'm gonna stock up >_<

i was looking at this Dr tims website and this is what it says about established aquaria

"Established aquaria: Even established aquaria can benefit from the addition of One and Only Nitrifying Bacteria in circumstances such as those listed below that can lead to the temporary loss of some nitrifying bacteria:
1) Adding a number of new fish to the tank that significantly increases the population biomass
2) After gravel vacuuming the bottom substrate
3) After changing the water
4) After doing filter maintenance and changing filter media
5) After treating the tank for disease with chemicals or antibiotics which can kill or severely harm the biological filter.

Now im not too sure about # 2 and 3... is it possible to loose bacteria from a gravel vac and a water change.... i always though this was not the case... someone correct me if im wrong....

You do lose some, but it's not enough to damage your tank. The bacteria pretty much comes right back overnight so there is really no threat. They probably just added that in to make the "pros" look better.
