I recently set up a 55 gallon. I added a few plants ( which had been in an established tank for about 1 week), holey rock, and driftwood, and I let it run for 5 days.

Last night I did about a 30% water change, added Bio Spira and filter media, and a few fish. (3 small angels, 4 albino cories)

It has been 18 hours. I just checked my parameters.

pH- 7.6-7.8
Ammonia- 0
Nitrites- 0
Nitrates- 5-10

This is good right? If the Bio Spira fails, when should I expect to see ammonia? I have extra Bio Spira if needed, and I am also prepared to do lots of water changes etc, if needed.

Thanks!

Looks like you're good to go. Parameters all look like a cycled tank. You don't have that high of a bio-load on your tank, so even if the bio-spira fails you probably won't get much ammonia that isn't handled quickly. Just monitor it every day. There's too much variable to predict a certain amount of time before it would show up. As long as you followed the directions on the bio-spira, I don't expect that you would have any reason to think it would fail.

Your parameters look real good. Did you add the whole bag of Bio-Spira? You said you had extra so I was just wondering. If not I do believe the bag says to add it all.
I pretty much did the same thing you have done with my 55 gal several months ago, seeded from my 29 gal and added Bio-Spira.
I did have one small ammonia spike on about the 5th day.I did maybe 2 30% water changes to bring the ammonia down to 0 and things went great after that.Good luck.

I had the 90 gallon size packet. I read an earlier post where someone recommended saving a bit just in case, so I put about 3/4 of it in and kept the rest.

I relieved that it appeared to work! I will keep testing just to make sure!

This is great to know - I am planning a 55 gallon tank, and was going to do the same thing. Nice to know that someone has had success with it!

Do you remove the filter with carbon? or leave that in there. I was looking at the instructions for use and they said that shouldn't be used with the light that kills germs, medication or carbon.

do you have to remove the carbon filter when using this product.

Freshly set up tank, the whisper filter comes with the pad that goes in it with carbon. so I did what it told me to do and put the pad with carbon in it in. I realize that most people here do not get a new pad for a long time just running it though some aquarium water and sticking it back in as needed.

But will it stop bio-spira from working??

nother question. there is a well of water before it goes though the pad and sponge and empty's back into my tank of my whisper filter. do i leave this area empty or do I put in something. like the little tubes or balls i see in the filter area of my lfs to give more room / place for my bacteria to grow.

As far as I know carbon does not effect bio-spira, at least it did not appear to hurt it in my case. You can put something behind the filter if you want like a sponge. You can usually get the sponges designed for the aquaclear filters for cheap at the LFS. If you do that just rinse it every few weeks or so in tank water and put it back in. This will give you an additional spot for bacteria to grow as well as make it safer to replace your filter pad since you have bacteria elsewhere.
