from my understanding, bio spira needs something to feed on. is there anything besides fish that would work? such as the raw shrimp or anything like that? and does anyone know if its available around philadelphia? and is it worth it for a 15 gallon tank?

The point of Biospira is instant fish tank. If you are going to use a shrimp as an ammonia source, skip the cost of the Biospira. Biospira works because the instant fish provide the ammonia source to sustain the biologicals in the Biospira.

Bio-Spiria has had some good results and accounts from a lot of people if and only if handled, shipped, maintained and used properly...

Secondly, it is packaged in a media that will help to sustain the colonies for a very short time.

However, there is NO susch thing as an instant cycle. Just doesn't exist. If so, I would purchase a tank tomorrow, throw in the recommended spiria and fish and walk away until I did my weekly WC...

Personally, I would treat spira much like one would a small seeding from using media off of another tank. It will still require time and testing to ensure the proper conditions as I am sure there will be fish involved.

Ammonia (or a shrimp) can be used for a pseudo-type fishless cycle process, but if so, it is essential that you do not over-dose the concentrations (say max of 4ppm)

Bio-Spira is designed to instantly cycle the tank. That's what it does. It has been tested with professional aquarists on a large scale. It is the ONLY product on the market that does that. It REQUIRES proper handling and refrigeration in order to be viable. There is no need to do anything but follow the directions. A fishless cycle is not needed nor recommended. Using Bio-Spira is the same thing as moving a cycled filter to a new tank. The bacteria are present to handle the bio-load and MUST have a bio-load to support them.

It's hard to guarantee that the Bio-Spira that you have purchased received has been properly handled (i.e. refridgerated at all times) however. It's not unheard of to receive a "dead batch", and hence I would feel much safer using caution.

it would probably be more reliable to get some used media from someone you know or the LFS.

biospira works great, but only if its constantly refrigerated.

Sort of like milk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Nolapete, well said.

I had good results with it, but I was in a fishy cycle (knew no better then). That (or being in a rush and having no used media) to me would be reasons I would use it now though. Like the others said, it is VERY important to keep it refrigerated. If you get it, take a cooler and a coldpack with you.
