Hi
I have just ordered enough bio spira to add to my 10 day old tank which has one pleco in it already!!!! bought when we couldn't buy any ammonia and ddin't realise we could use a piece of fish etc!!!
My question is , do I add all the bio spira when it arrives or wait until we bring our potato puffer home, or add some now and monitor the tank, maybe adding more later!!???
The puffer is paid for and waiting at the shop until we are pretty sure the tank is ready for him because although we don't want to lose any fish if at all possible, we really don't want to lose the puffer as we have been visiting him for about 6 weeks now and are very attached to him!!!
Any help gratefully recieved :idea2:
Thanks
Sue

i would suggest adding half the sachet first
and then again when you add the new fish but do constantly monitor your ammonia and nitrite

also if your nitrates are already high due to the beginning of your cycle then do a good sized water change before adding the bio spira to bring it down
as i think it is recommended not to waterchange for a week to allow the bacteria to colonise properly.

i added mine to a cycle in progress and waited for 24 hours before adding fish after registering 0 on nitrites and ammonia i went bought my fish

and added the rest of the sachet

i also ordered enough to basically double dose my tank to be extra safe
also the bacteria will adjust to the fish load so if you get good readings then before adding fish think about what else you want in your tank.

so far the water parameters are looking pretty good
so hopefully i am through the hard part

good luck

The Bio-Spira will have directions--follow them.

Do you have a scientific name for the puffer? From what I can tell, a potato puffer is Tetraodon miurus, which is a lurker puffer that may end up eating anything kept with them--the pleco included. They also need a sandy bottom, so they can bury themselves and lunge at passing food.

Sorry to question this, but puffers are sensitive animals that require specific care and are very intolerant of poor water conditions--most are not a good choice for a first tank you've setup and run.

The bio spira is meant to be added to a new tank with a full bio load of fish. If you add it to a tank with existing fish, depending on how much ammonia is already in the water, the bio spira will have to play catch up. What I did in my tanks, was to put the fish in a temporary container, drain the tank, refill it, and then add the full bio load of fish. If you add the bio spira to your tank now, you may end up doing a water change and changing out some of the bacteria.

Hi
Yes we are from the UK, not far from Gatwick lol , so hopefully we will get the bio spira nice and quick :o
My son is puffer mad and thats about the only fish he really wants so we have done lots of research and intend to test the water lots to try and ensure the best conditions possible for him .
We were told at the fish shop ( where the owner keeps freshwater puffers herself!) that the congo puffer should be OK with a pleco as long as he is bigger than the puffer and this one is about 3 times bigger, I also read on another website that a guy tried several fish with his congo puffer and found that the only fish he tolerated was a pleco, we are going to watch them very carefully and were even thinking of using a divider for a while!!
Fingers crossed !
regards
Sue
