i have a biowheel 350 on my 55 gal. i've never had any problems with it over the last year but yesterday i noticed the the wheels dont want to spin like they always have. i checked the filters and they are pretty clean. i took out the filters and the water flows the same with them in or out. i cant figure what the problem is may somebody here can help me. thank you.

If they still rotate, but intermittently its normal. But also sometimes you get gunk in those purple parts that hold the wheel. I've sometimes found small baby pond snails jam the wheels or they're almost invisible that I dont see them on that sloped outlet and the wheels make contact with them also.

ill check those. i spun the wheels by hand and they seemed to spin goodbot then they would stop for a few seconds then spin a half a turn then stop a few seconds then spin a full turn.

i have numerous 350's and emperor 400's and what you described is normal for bio wheels. the older they get the less they 'spin' around but as long as they do spin/move even slowly there is no problem. If you call and ask marineland about this they will tell you the same thing. you never have to replace bio wheels thats what they have told me.

ok. there spining a little better now that i cleaned the bracket but not much better. im use to see them spinning pretty fast. i have bio wheels on all 11 of my tanks and never had a problem with any of them

is there anything else that it could be or that i can do?

You could try gently rinsing the wheel in some used tank water to remove
SOME of the build-up on the wheel. The build-up causes the wheel to
become out-of-balance which results in the uneven rotation.

Also, it's been my experience that any tank water level less than full will
cause slower than normal rotation of the wheel.

Yes clean them in tank water, take your finger and clean the wheels between the pleats, i use a Q-Tip to clean the purple bearings.......:)
