Bio-Wheel Better than standard filter?

Bio Spiro the BEST for new tank set-up

I just downsized my three tanks into two - emptied my 20-gallon into my new (slightly used) 55 gallon tank. 2" Flourite and 2" gravel on bottom, nicely mixed up. Left 36 hours with 2 Aqua Clear 50's and 1 LARGE Bio-Wheel filter running to sift out the major cloud of soil. Added 51 ml of Bio-Spira to the tank after adding all the good plants from the old 20-gal. A couple of hours later added all the fish from the 20-gallon tank, except my 4 African dwarf frogs - moved them to the 29-gallon heavily planted tank that doesn't have any blood worm hogs - poor frogs - I had to duel with swords to keep the mollies, platies and algae eaters from beating them to it. The fish in the Bio-Spira tank are happy and healthy. But here is the revelation I discovered today. I bought an Aqua Clear Power Head a while back and never used it. I have been toying with the idea of buying a diatom filter to polish the water. I had this gizmo all along - I just didn't realize it. I just had to buy the Quick Filters (very fine white floss material), which needs to be changed frequently, especially if you're going from tank to tank, polishing the water. Talk about crystal clear. Only takes a couple of hours a week to accomplish this miracle. Saved me tons of money too. :dance2: P.S. If people are disturbed by the uncontrollable volume of water coming off the bio-wheel, the only fix that a tech support guy told me at Penquin's website is to trim the impeller blades ever so carefully to make them shorter. He even sent me an extra impeller blade in case I over cut. I really helped in reducing heavy water movement into the tank - even with the water level right up to the top. :dance2:

what about bio balls? as good as a bio wheel? or does the wheel keep it out of the tank?

I have an external for my 50 gal which keeps it crystal clear but is a bit of a pain to clean compared to a biowheel. I had a biowheel for my 20 gal and I'm putting one in my new 29 gal planted. They work great and are a breeze to maint. Your best bet would be to find it on petsmart.com, print out a copy, and take it to your local petsmart for them to price match for you (cuts the price in half!).

There is a theory that Bio-Wheels will gas out CO2 if you are adding it for plant use....It sounds correct, anyone know if this is in fact true and how bad gas-off is?

It really depends on the depth of the tank. I would agree that any surface level agitation is potentially going to remove some of your CO2, but I would think that as long as you have the diffuser somewhere out of the way of the water column that it would be fine.

I have 2 Emperor 400's on my 90g, and am preparing to equip the tank with a CO2 system. I have seen my same setup at a store where I purchased it from and it is working fine with the same 2 Biowheels on it and a CO2 system. They have a 10g tank of CO2 that only needs to be filled up once a year.

I have a penguin bio wheel 330 and an undergravel filter with powerheads in my 55 gallon tank..If I had the choice in the two on which filter I should keep, I would take out the penguin bio wheel..Just my opinion thou on what I use..
