Anyone out there have some pics of a mature bio wheel? I know it changes color as the cultures grow on it. I just wanted to see to what extent and to what general color.

i dont have any pictures but its a pretty good change in color mines kinda brownish ... yes i have a healthy tank to and there is not alge in it either
well back when i had mine it became a greenish yellowish type of color and i tried to scrape that stuff off but it never removed itself until cleaning time. hope that helps
MTiller, just so you know, it was a good thing when the wheel became that color. It meant nitrifying bacteria was building up which took the ammonia out of your water. If you read documentation that came with the filter, it says you should never replace the wheel and wash it only when there is clear algae or other debris built up or if the axels get gunked up and the wheel stops spinning. Hope you didn't switch to another filter because every time you cleaned the wheel, the tank got nasty.
I don’t know what qualifies as “mature” but both of these have been running for about a year and a half. They are grayish brown. The only time they get algae on them is if I overfeed or leave the light on for like a month and the tank has a lot of algae in it. I just run my finger across it to get it off.
