I have a bio wheel and the flow coming through is so weak it hardly turnsthe wheel. And on top of that, I clean the thing all the time.anyone elso had similar experiences?

The instructions that came with my Penguin say that even if the wheel is turning very slowly or irregularly, it's still working and you shouldn't replace it or remove it, and the only part of the filter that needs cleaning is the inside, the bio wheel itself shouldn't even really be rinsed unless it's absolutely necessary. The output is not nearly what I'd like it to be in terms of water movement, which is why I use the Penguin in addition to filters with a higher flow rate. The bio-wheel is home to millions of bacteria, unless there's a real problem with it I wouldn't recommend removing it, but you might want to add another filter or powerhead to get the water circulating more.

Yeah, if that thing moves at all its getting plenty of oxygen the bacteria need. If it's discolored, that's fine. The filter catridge acts like a prefilter so gunk should get caught in it, not in the biowheel.

Keep the filter clean and the water level high, and the wheel(s) should turn like new. Thats the experience Ive had with my penguin 330 that Ive been running since october of last year. IMO having to clean the filter often is a good thing, it means that its doing its job.

I do not waste my time with those (rather pricey) power filters because, like others have said, you wind up removing the wheel thing.

It is such a waste of money, when you can get another (much cheaper) power filter. Anyway that is JMO.
