Ok cast your votes. This is on HOB filters. My vote went for bio-wheels since the wheels are easy to maintain and almost never need cleaning at all. Plus the wheel has no mechanical capabilities and it has a very large surface area.

Bio-wheels:
All penguin models
All Emperor models
DOES NOT INCLUDE CANISTER

AquaClear
All AquaClear HOB models

Wouldn't an HOB with mechanical and bio wheels be better? Haven't seen any filters that are just bio wheels.

I started w/ Aquaclear and have bought several Bio-wheels, but IMO the A/C is a much better in the way of mechanical and biological (everything in the filter is geared towards both of these)...I just feel for a HOB filter you cant beat an Aquaclear

Sorry, i should have been a little more specific, the bio-wheels i am refering to the penguin or the emperor models with the mechanical and chemical cartridge.

A con with the biowheels is that if the flow isnt strong enough, the wheel wont move, this is more common in the penguins than it is in the emperors.

I don't see it as even close - Marineland filters have done a much, much better job of filtering my tanks than the Hagens have done.

I use both and to be honest I like the ACs better. In time I will switch out the Marineland and replace it with an AC.

The AC with ceramic rings holds just as much bacteria as a biowheel. Besides I don't really like the biowheels filter media. AC has a lot more room and variables to try.

I have several Magnum 350's.

One of them came with 2 bio-wheel's.
Bio Wheels are to maintain healthy algae blooms

I have biowheels and they work fine on the tank that theyre on, which, last time i checked, had crystal clear water. (and has recovered from an algae bloom before)

My vote goes for the AquaClears - specially the larger ones - Penguin wheels are just plain ineffective - bad mechanical filtration which gets clogged up and dooms the bio-wheel from turning... IMO there's not a whole lot even an Emperor filter can toss out against the AC 500 - it's truly a beast
