1 week old tank. I retested my water today and my results were....

PH-7.3

Ammonia-.25-.50 (with daily water changes)

Nitrite-0-.25. dont know what that means or what do do.

Nitrate-0

i have 3 lemon tetras and 3 black tetras....please tell me what nitrites are and what to do aboout that

Nitrites are the by product of ammonia being consumed. Sounds like you are on your way to cycling. And, you need to read up on cycling a bit. A very quick run down of it..

Fish produce ammonia through there waste, there are bacteria that consume the ammonia and the by product of that is nitrites. Then there are bacteria that consume the nitrites and the by product of that is nitrates. Nitrates are removed through water changes or if you have live plants, they will use it as fertilizer.

You need to treat nitrites the same as ammonia and keep the level as low as possible since you are doing a fish cycle. When you have 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites with some nitrates, you are completely cycled. :)

Nitrites are a sign that your cycle is under way, it's all part of the nitrogen cycle.

that graph looks like one for a fishless cycle...not enough water changes to be a fishy cycle :D

if nitrite gets to high, your fish will be burned on the outside of their bodies

keep your nitrite under 0.25 to prevent this. dont add any salt though, as some LFS's will recommend. the nitrite is still there, just detoxified a bit.
