I read somewhere that the biological filtration in a canister filter competes with the fish for oxygen in order to create the benificial bacteria.
Should that be a concern or do I have enough oxygen going into the water?
Thats the reason I was inquiring in the best but silent and not too bubbly way of adding oxygen to the water.
*As far as water movement the XP3's jet nozzle is
In the back top left corner pointing right.
On the front bottom right corner I have a Maxi jet 1200 pointing left.
Im trying to make a clock wise current in the entire tank from top to bottom.
*For surface water disturbance I just bought an air wand for the middle of the tank. Not to mention the disturbance created by the 2 HOB's emperors 400 on each side.
Im shooting for ample water movement like spydrkss indicated. But why stop there.
If disturbing the water surface adds oxygen and so does water movement, then why not both.
What do you guys think?

some bacteria do consume oxygen.

That being said, look at the cubic volume of bacteria vs the cubic volume of fish in the tank.

I don't think the bacteria will use that much that would cause oxygen deprivation in your fish.

You are over-thinking this.

Your two E-400's will provide enough water movement to ensure that the water is fully oxygenated.

Yes the bacteria do use oxygen to convert NH3 (ammonia) into NO3 (nitrate). That oxygen has to come from somewhere and it comes from the oxygen in the aquarium water.

But the oxygen is always being replenished so it is really not a concern for you.

Actually, the O for the bacteria for a bio-wheel comes from the air, that is the whole point of the design.

 You'll be fine. You've got 'movement', 'surface-break' + the bio-wheels p/u oxygen exposing part of the media to air /water while spinning. All of this combined gives you ample oxygenation. Relax --- Enjoy --- Don't Worry!!!
