How do you know when to replace your BioMax Media in the AC1500 hob filter????

Some people just keep a sponge and 2 bags of BioMax media in the filter. Is that the way to go??

Hi, if I recall Hagen says to replace the BioMax every 3 months as it will become too 'loaded' or clogged with bacteria. I was actually going to start using the combination you just mentioned myself, the sponge and a couple of bags of BioMax. Always keeps one on standby.

It was also suggested to me, that when replacing the BioMax, to put some of the old stuff (maybe 1/4 to 1/3) in with the new.

I think I might use 2 or 3 bags sized for the AC50 in my AC110.

Hope this helps out some...

That seems very expensive and unnecessary. Although it does say to replace every three months I have never replaced mine.
Hi there, just out of curiosity, how long have you had yours?

Ofcourse these companies have to make their money somewhere, but I would like to stretch some of this stuff (and money) too.

@akapaul26

Sorry, I messed up the quotes a little on the above post (I need to go to bed), but I was wondering how long you have been using the Bio Max without replacing it, as I would like to follow suite.

Some of it is over a year old now I just rinse it weekly or bi-weekly. I haven't noticed Nitrate levels rise or a decrease in my water quality. I do have to wonder if it is clogged and not as effective though I will say. I have read that before too but never paid too much attention to it. I wonder how ineffective it is as it get older. I wonder if anyone has actually done any research to back up their claim that it needs to be replaced every 3mo.

As long as you rinse it every now and then, there's no reason to replace it.

Let me tell you if you put 2 bags of biomedia and replace the carbon bag..expect to see small debris float around your tank...the bag of carbon acts as a filter and traps debris....i still like it with two bags of biomedia though...i replaced both bags with seachem matrix :)

I only rinse bio media if its getting clogged and reducing flow. I've never used Biomax, but eithers its a marketing ploy for them to make more money or else I'd be looking elsewhere for media as I've never heard of bio media that needs to be replaced. Matrix is cheaper and never heard of anyone having to replacing it.
