This is the first time and algae eaters which are hillstream loaches aren't doing anything to the black algae on the plants,i believe i can't do anything much but change the water to decrease nitrate levels, cause of dying plants probably are related to algae growth,am i taking the right steps?pls give suggestions.

How much light do you have? and what fert do you use?
Maybe you'll get more help if this was posted in the plant forum...
Removing all infected leaves will help...

If it is black, then it sounds to me like it is a mould rather than an algae. Mould is a definite sign of problems related to overfeeding, overstocking and inadequate filtration. Is this black growth on the gravel as well as plants?
