Black Beauty Blasting Grit or 3M ColorQuartz S-Grade ?

I just ordered 100 lbs of Turface MVP Gray. Pics I have seen show it as black when wet.

I got samples of it the other day in the mail, looks good but there is no weight to it. If you add water to your aquarium it will go flying all over the tank, and probably even make a crater that will expose the bottom tank glass.

This is the size they sent me:

Yeah, the light weight of the Turface isn't as much of a problem as you think. I used 100% SMS for a long time it was fine. At times it took a little extra effort to hold plants down, but I worked around it. Point is, if you like it, don't worry about it.

Also, I wouldn't use any blasting material. I think it just poses too many risks.

If you don't want Turface, I'd go with the Colorquartz.

The color quartz S-grade is beautiful, very perfectly round granuals. Depending on the individual bags it can be VERY hard to clean, quite oily. I purchased some black S-grade for my cichlid tank about a month ago. I currently have spent almost 20 hrs trying to clean it and it is still oily (I have been told that black is the worst though). I have not found anyone that has had such a problem with it though so I must have gotten really bad bags.

My friend also bought some T-grade but we have not opened that up yet. It is also very nice, it is more like little chips of stone. I am not sure how sharp it is though. I can update you on that later if you like.

Could you possibly try and take some macro pictures of the T grade and the S grade?

I would love to see some S grade before I travel out to buy it.

I'm also thinking about doing a large pallet order of T grade if I can get enough people interested, I would like to see how it looks up close first.
T grade in black in not availible in Washington...
I've searched every where for pictures and can't find any at all, except for a couple fish tanks taken from 5 feet away which shows me nothing on the actual grain size.

Is the S grade like normal sand or is it a very tiny grain sand?

I will try to get a picture of the S-grade tomorrow but we are not opening the T-grade in case we do not keep it, sorry.

I broke down and got the Tahitian moon sand myself & I am quite happy with it.

I have no experience with typical "sand" but I believe the S-grade is about the same size of standard sand.

I tried to get a couple different shots.

Just some grains in a paper towel

This is just some leftovers I had in the bottom of a bucket outside so there is some debris in there.

Here is a shot of the Tahitian moon sand that I am using. Pretty poor picture though.

Good luck finding the right substrate for you.

Thank you for the pictures, this is the first time I am finally able to see what it actually looks like up close.

Looks pretty nice but also very small as allot of the grains can actually fit into the number 9 on the dime, also looks much smaller than the moon sand.

I think I'm going to try and pick up a bag of S grade today, hopefully it doesn't take to long to rinse.
I will post pics when I get it in my tank.

Did you end up picking up the S-grade?

Yes and I like it very much.

To plant my Val's I just push them in the sand with my finger and I'm done, perfectly planted with no roots above the surface. It's like perfect planting substrate, hopefully it will do good for my plants in the long run, we will see :perv:
