black convict, bloodparrot crossbreed kind question

i acctually could care less if somebody made a chimpman. hell i might even try to sell it to my local petstore.

as for the rest of the post its just opinion although opinion is important and everyone is entitled to one.

as for breeding hybrids my opinion is we should not do it because we dont have enuff information to know what exactly is good and what is bad. until more people with proper knoledge and suitable accomodations to do proper exsperiments to see what works and what doesnt we should keep to just breeding regular fish .

but who am i to tell anyone else what to do with their tanks

The cross between human and chimp is called "HumanZee". There were rumors that it had already been attempted but the embryos were later aborted. There is a National Geographic documentary on this subject. When human is involved, it's definitely a moral issue.

Lighten up! Fish keeping is for fun, not a place for moral argument. Human has been manipulating nature for thousands of years. Few if any of our domesticated animal and crop are pure breed.

Thats my point though, whats the big difference? We evolved equally as everything else so why are we so special? Just because we can build cities and cars and planes and have wars? We are just extremeists in the animal kingdom.

So, ultimately we dont really have the right to go around messing with nature.

But that is a topic far too great for the purpose of this conversation. Its the purity of the aquarium hobby we are most concerned with, ensuring beautiful natural creatures stay the way we found them.

Some care, others dont, and thats the way it will always be.

Sorry, you just brought up another ideological debate--Evolution versus Creationism. Religeous people will disagree that we evolved equally as everything else. According to the Book of Genesis, God created men to rule the world and we have every right to manipulate nature.

theres should be a forum where all threads like this get moved to
it could be called

"the intolerance forum"
or
"the debates that go on far far too long forum"
or
"the we cant agree to disagree forum"

hi all as you can see by my un firetex1 ,i breed hybrids in the uk ,and have great fun developing my fire mouth texas cichlids all fertile and look good ,man has bred fish for 1000's of years and the ornamental fish industry has man made fish already ,and this is been added all the time ,so if i get the firetex to were i like it in shape and colour it will be sold as a new type for the aquarium trade soon here in the uk.

as for the old sticks in the mud get over it, it's having fun with my fish ,and that's what the hobby is about ,i dont plan to make a million out of it ,it was all down to one little firemouth getting in there and doing the deed but they have made nice little fish ,texas in colour with blush cheeks and are only 2 inches long and spawn well
and i have a small compact community cichlid which is very small ,easy to keep a ideal beginer fish .

these fish are kept in a small tank ideal for kids to keep ,and are very hardy ,what could the hobby want any more except good ilttle fish .

so im in the development stage of this fish and its great fun nothing more , i have bred fish for over 30 years and this little fish has given me so far the best yet ,so any body that reads this don't be put off by those who don't want fish to be fun anymore ,go on do it experiment your not going to kill off the cichlid world

only the wallys that don't want you to have fun in your hobby ,oh i fogot yes you will do what you want anyway your way its your fish house ,tank ,shed what ever it's yours to do with as you see fit .

and they didan't stop parrots being sold did they .lol !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate contributing to an old thread, but I do have to offer some counterpoints.

These "stick in the mud" people have legitimate concerns. They (we) don't like to see the genetic lineage of species muddled and humanized. Yes, it's about having fun but to a lot of people that includes keeping species separate, as they commonly are in their natural environment. Without people who view fish this way, their likely would be no end in mixing fish and many pure species would be lost altogether within the trade.

It's also a matter of just downright hating the silly fads that come into the hobby. Like all hobbies, there are people who see themselves as taking it more seriously than others but I have to admit it is frustrating to see people get coerced into buying a tatooed/hybridized/genetically manipulated fish because it looks cool or whatever. And then see the business push out the largely untouched species get pushed out because they are not as "attractive" to the average Joe Hobbyist, it's really concerning.

I'm in no way insinuating that your project is harmful. I don't see any big issues with hybridizing fish so long as the buyer knows so and is aware of what consequences that may it bring. I honestly believe that anyone creating hybrids should be responsible and encourage them to be kept separate from the nonhybrids. I don't like many of these fish myself and would rather stick to a fish whose appearance can be attributed to just one species. I agree, you do with your tanks what you wish...but there is a matter of being informed about your decisions beforehand.

I am, however, interested in how you bred a 5" fish with another 5-6" fish and resulted in a 2" fish...

Hi Well this has stired things up a little ,but you are right in the fact breeders should keep all stock apart when breeding hybrids or it just gets out of hand .

the hybrids of firemouths crossed with a female Texas were at f7 stage the male Firemouth was a 2 inch highly coloured fish f10 ,the female Texas was 6''inches at 6 months old ,the males in the line were 12'' fish at a year .

the fry were reared for 6 months and only the smallest were kept for this type ,the larger ones turned out red and were normal texas size 6-8'' and kept at 86f ,these are kept for the red type and grow large 12''inch fish .

so two types were created ,the smallest 2''inch fish are firemouth shape and almost hiback and deeper body and have blush cheeks when breeding ,males have longer dorsal and anal fins and thicker body and one black centre spot and silver to blue freckles all over ,the female is more grey and banded and two centre spots in black ,at six months they will spawn in a flower pot and guard the eggs and are good with the fry .
they have a good nature and make a good small comunity fish ,broods are no more than 150 eggs /fry , I have a silver type in development and a albino type as yet .

as for life expectancy iam up to 6 years and hope they can get past ten -15 years to make a good pet ,but at the moment they are just a private fish for my fish house only ,I have other projects also with koi and have a midori goi showa in the development stage ,but this also looks good with the use of Marusaka scaled midori goi ( the only japanese breeder to fix a scaled type green koi ) so the green won't turn black as the fish gets older as with most midori goi carp ,I have bred fish from gold fish to Discus over my 49 years and it gives me great fun as the results can be Quite fantastic for a home breeder .

All the best
Firetex1

Why do people breed hybridized fish without knowing the longterm ecological impacts and side-effects sciences? "Because they can" and "Because it's fun" is anything but responsible and mature.
