Black, Eyeless, White Cloud Minnow - New Tank Owners

Are you testing for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? I wouldn't bother testing, if you cant test for all 3.

Yes, we are using the full liquid test kit and testing everything. Nothing has been against what they recommend in the instructions for the test kit or the link provided above except the Ammonia which we've been battling to get below .25. We've done water changes, cleaning, etc but it keeps maintaining the .25. The instructions and the link in this forum state that during the initial cycle the Amonia levels would spike so we figured it normal even though we continue to try and lower it often. Our water softener says on the bottle that it is also helps break down any ammonia from fish waste but still .25 even right after a water change.

0.25ppm ammonia is high. I'm glad you haven't lost any fish, but surprised you haven't. You've got a hardy bunch!

I realize that it's higher then what it is supposed to be and I'm surprised we haven't lost additional fish either but we are doing the best we can. I don't know why the stupid tank won't lower in Ammonia. It's definatly not our unwillingness to try. We pamper these fish daily trying to get things balanced and healthy.

Hopefully you read-up on cycling and what's required to establish and maintain it. It's not a healthy fish environment without it.

Yes, as far as I can tell we are doing everything instructed and I've read all about it. Maybe I'm an idiot... I don't know... but doing the best I can.

Please don't take it the wrong way!! I'm not trying to belligerent, but you were given excellent advice in the above posts and you seem to have discounted it.

This seems very unfair to say? What have I discounted that is reasonable for me to fix? Not killing my blind fish? Not having 8 fish in a tank? Sorry, I'm stuck with them. Our kids have named each one of them and we only followed what the stupid pet shop told us. Now I'm just doing what I can to help them all? With all due respect... how many people out there are willing to go through the great lengths I'm going through for a single 10 cent minnow? I've been spending money on it. Taking time daily to try and feed it. Taking time to post about it on this forum as well as get pictures. etc. I'm not "discounting" anything. I'm here doing everything I freaking can trying to get our tank balanced, fish healthy, and keep my eyeless minnow alive.

I would say, now that you have gotten correct information, you are going above and beyond to make your fish happy. And, it was bad information from the pet store that got you in this mess in the first place. Could you have done more research first? Maybe. But, you trusted the pet store to give you good information, and it didn't. I am not sure why your ammonia won't lower. Do you have any nitrates when you test for them, or are they still at zero? If they are still at zero, then for some reason, your tank is not cycling properly. If you have nitrates, then I'm not sure what to tell you. You might also try testing your water straight out of the tap to see if it has ammonia in it. That might be part of the issue. As for the eyeless white cloud, I am not sure there is much you can do for him. If he refused blood worms, that is a a bad sign. Most fish go nuts for them. Of course, the rest of your tank didn't seem to want them either. If they don't get eaten, you will need to remove them with a gravel vacuum or they will pollute the tank. I am proud of you for testing your water and doing water changes and taking care of your fish. I wish you hadn't gotten bad information from the pet store.

Thanks Emily!

Ok everybody *emergency update - please help*

Found the problem. Pet smart recommended this for our 10 gallon:

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754084&f=PAD/psNotAvailInUS/No
(maybe a different size then linked)

I had a bad feeling about it as we've still had the amonia issues but only getting worse. So I purchased one of the small 10 gal circular tube vacuums instead (same thing just different shape and brand) and found that the one linked above was removing like... nothing! I've never had a tank to vacuum so I just assumed I was doing it right but after using this one I found it was doing nothing and this thing pulled out a huge tank of filth water (solidly from the mid-layer gravel) and now we seem to be balancing good. All this was discovered only a week or two ago so our fish have dealt with it since amazingly but we were doing tons of water changes etc.

BUT, my eyeless minnow :( He's still been kicking through everything and apparently eating as it's been 4 months and he's still alive. But he's really unhealthy now. Really skinny and he's had that white spot on his mouth no matter what I did. I tried treating for fungus and broad antibiotics 2-3 times now with no results. The past week he's been on broad antibiotics because he's been acting really odd hiding in the corner of the tank and bottom of the tank and his eye sockets (remember he has no eye ball) having began filling with scabby looking crud. Today he's swimming in place really fast but not going anywhere and got a bulge on one of his gills. He won't close his mouth and acts like he can't breath and is grasping for air or something because his mouth keeps going 100 mph.

Any ideas? I'm thinking maybe some kind of gill disease or something but I'm not sure. I'm not going to kill the fish so please don't suggest that but any final medications I could try? Broad and fungus does nothing so I'm thinking something that treats gill disease and parasites combo?

How does your gravel vacuum not work? Are you keeping your drain bucket as low as possible? That Hagen one in your link is about as good as they get as far as siphon ones go.

I've got a $5 eBay Chinese import special that's dollar store quality, but works great.

It just doesn't noticeably vacuum the crap out of the gravel. It sucks water out really fast but it barely gets a good pull when I dig it around in the gravel. I replaced it for the 1-10 gallon version of this one:

http://www.petsmart.com/product/ind...493&lmdn=Product+Type&f=PAD/psNotAvailInUS/No

and it INSTANTLY was pulling pretty much mud out of the mid level gravel with each little wiggle I did. Way less water being pulled out and way more crap. I did try the tube clamp and everything on the other one but the thing just wouldn't pull out the filth like this little tube did. The other one was a huge pain in the butt to get pulling water out (have to shake it up and down like crazy to start) as well whereas this little one is instant.

So, I don't know... but there is no comparison. Maybe mine was broke or something causing it not to get the gravel suction I needed I'm not sure... but didn't work at all obviously.

I just bought a broad spectrum azithromiacin I think so I think that's going to be his last chance of survival unless someone else gives me an idea. I really like this fish alot and have babied the thing for 4 months so I'll be disappointed.

I put the broad spectrum antibiotic this morning that included fungus, fin disease, etc (not at home yet so don't know exact name). Will I kill my other fish if I put the new azithro broad antibiotic in there tonight as well? It's been 6+ hours...

Thanks!

The medicine for the sick fish won't kill your healthy fish, BUT, it will kill off the beneficial bacteria and your tank will go through it's cycle all over again. This is one of the reasons it is recommended to have a hospital tank for treating sick fish--that way, your main tank won't be affected by the medicines used on your fish.

do you know if your filter has any activated carbon in it ? the filter pads im assuming that is what your filer has may have carbon in them which would nullify any medicene you put in there

Emily, I asked about seperating my fish a long time ago but both petsmart and my original pet shot told me no need. Frustrated...LOL.

As far as the carbon no... I take out the active carbon filter thing. I use a foam filter when I use medicine.

Ok, so here is what I got currently...

Lifeguard Tetra - All in One Treatment (chloro, tetraethyl, imidazolidinone.

This has not worked. It only got continued to get worse after 4 days of treatment (I thought 5 but was wrong). I did the pills for that this morning but planned to discontinue at this point.

API E.M. Erythromycin (erythromycin)

I did a 30% water change when I got home to try and dilute the above treatment. I also gave the sponge filter a good rinse. Then added.

API Fungus Cure (Victoria Green, Acriflavine)

In the past this didn't help the white lip dot. But I'm not sure if this is associated. Wondering if I should add it to the mix since I have it. It very well may be fungus and if so I'm not sure that I'm treating it with the API E.M.? Don't want to kill the fish with too many mixtures at the same time but I'm worried that I'm not treating the right thing :(
