if you dont have many other fish, the BGK will be fine for a few years at least. They grow pretty slowely. like the other guys said jsut make sure you have a lot of hiding spots.
Black Ghost Knifefish?

I have a BGK almost a year old now. He was only about 3 inches long when I first bought him - now he is almost 8 inches.
He is in a 72 Gal Bowfront with lots of Danios and Tetras - he gets along just fine with everyone.
I have a styrofoam log - that is supposed to float near the top of the tank - a hiding place for fry and small fish I think. I took some fishing line and tied it to a large rock. Now Shadow (BGK) has a log with 4 ways in/out - and he uses them all....getting a little big for one of them....but hey he still trys.
They are great fish - wonderful personality believe it or not. Shadow will come to the side of the tank if I talk to him - anytime of the day/night - not just feeding times.
I would love to find another BGK - about the same size as Shadow - in hopes of finding a mate. I know that they have not been breed in captivity by many people, but I would still like to give it a try.

the electricity feild is for locating food. is there anyway to stunt there growth so they dont get to big for a 55?
I had mine in a 55 gal too. Very interesting fish to watch. Mine didn't even hide that much and was always out in the open looking for food in the rocks. He ate flakes sometimes but he really liked brine shrimp. =D

I don't think stunting a fish is really appropriate.:shakehead: This is really objectionable and a lot of people will disagree to stunting their growth.
stunting their growth is a negative thing, it isn't something you should purposely be trying to do.
I've got one in a custom 50 flat tank. He's a good 7 inches long, named Hoover for the way he eats. Good fish, good personality, he loves taking earthworms out of my hands. We occasionally have a tug of war, but the worm always looses. One note, they will take smaller fish, even if they have to do it one bite at a time. At least mine will. The only company mine keeps well is with a senegal bichir.
Mine loves to hide under a piece of driftwood, and he gathers java moss from all over the tank to decorate his cave. Then he tugs each piece into place with his mouth, and keeps it there. He's almost a gardener, except he bites other plants trying to pull them over.

What is the temprament of Knife fishes like the black Ghost and Clown? Whould they be too aggresive to put in a tank with some discus? Could they handle the 84 degree water? Sorry for the question within a question, but just curious...

The BGK isn't nearly as aggressive as the clown knives (Chitala). They can handle the 84 degrees. I wouldn't recommend the mix though particularly because the BGK is often active and will at all accounts try to swim in different angles which might stress the discus but this is only my experience.
