Hover the gravel vac over the sand. If the grains are pretty large, they shouldn't be sucked up anyways...

if the sand is fine just hold the vac a little above the surface, but with my sand its large silica grained so it can vac it just like gravel and go to the bottom glass and it doesnt get sucked up

Estes gravel is the best! It doesn't require as much rinsing as other kinds I don't think.
