This quick picture shows some propagules rooting in a planter.

They root fast. This one was potted up only a few weeks ago.

To plant the propagules you just bury the end with the root about 1/2-way down in the substrate. The pointy end of of the propagule should be sticking up in the air.

I put three propagules in this one, but I will snip one of them off later on because it will be too crowded. I think that two propagules per planter is a good number.

When you first bury them, do the leaves have to be out of the water, or can you bury them in a tank and just wait for them to grow higher than the surface?

Hi Vince. No they need to be up above the water's surface to germinate well. They will just rot if planted down underwater.

Black mangrove trees do not develop stilt roots the way that red mangroves (Rhizophora mangle) do, but they do grow these pneumatophores.

Pneumatophores probably help the mangrove trees to improve oxygen uptake in strongly anoxic substrates. Cypress knees are believed to have a similar function.

It takes a while for the pneumatophores to develop. I only began to see them a few months ago on my plants, but I have been growing them in riparium planters for a couple of years.
