My fantail developed black marks on his dorsal fin (this happened soonafter I got him from Walmart (only fish supplier we have in our town)) It recently has spread to his tail fins. How do I treat it? I read that black meant it was healing (cut or scrape or whatnot) but now that this black is on his tail fins, Im worried. Should I quarintine him in another tank?

Can you post a pic (or a really detailed description)? There are conditions that cause tissue to turn black, as well as black parasites, but it could also just be a normal change in colouration for your goldfish - they often develop or lose colour as they grow. If the fish is exhibiting any other symptoms, post them along with the pic.

I'll see what I can do about a pic. Id have to instal my webcam on my bedroom computer. I'll try and do it tonight.

It seems to be deteriorating his tail fin - it split (between the black spot) where it never was split before. Could it be fin rot? Other then that - he looks and eats completely normal.

He developed this when he was in my 1.5 gallon tank. I was changing the water once a week. Sad to say, it was before I knew any better, and I thought once a week was adequate, but I know better now how they can dirty up the water in a small tank.

Ive come to the conclusion that my fish just tore his fan tail somehow, and the black around it is healing, because it looks a bit better today. Will his torn fin ever grow back and heal, or is it split for life?

His black strip along the top of his dorsal fin is still a mystery tho. It never seems to get better or worse, and hes had it for several weeks now. Its just like a strip that follows the top edge of his top fin. And its jet black.

Anyway, just wanted to let yas know that im almost certain that its nothing serious on his tailfan.

my redtailed shark gets picked on by the other redtailed (i didnt know about their aggression with own species)... and when the rios heal they are black along the cut, in fact the healed part doesnt get color back for a couple of months at least. As long as the fish is acting normal i would say you were ok.
