Black Skirt Lost it's Tail!

calm down.

Why not keep him with your other black skirts? Mine have been fine with much smaller ones, although they are in a 55 with plenty of hides. I haven't seen any serious nipping out of them.

He is in a QT tank for the next week or so, maybe more. 10gal tank, whisper 20 filter, lamp for light, java moss, algae, sand substrate, fully cycled, heater, airstone, the works.

As for the "calm down", I would really like to not have any form of insult or aggression in my threads, and I am trying to remove such things from my personality as well.

Silentcircut, that "edit" was unnecessary. You seem to have a knack for being rude on purpose... I am still unsure of it being fine rot, the facts just don't add up. All the parms were fine, the fish was fine as well, still active and ate food when I fed them (before I noticed the missing tail fin) and it certainly darted around like the ones in my 30gal tank... it doesn't have the look of fin rot, just a white sort of scab over the nub...

I was not trying to be rude, nor is anything in my post at all rude if you take a step back and look at it objectively. I was not insulting Boss, I was actually trying to acknowledge that he had a different experience than mine, while reiterating the reasoning behind the stance I'd taken. Please don't jump to conclusions or read too much in to neutral language, and I think you'll find I'm not near so aggressive as you currently believe me to be.

In other words "calm down."

I agree with the fin rot theory. My black skirts had it twice. They seem to get it easier cause they are real skittish and get freaked out easy. The first time they got it i didn't know what is was and it got way out of control. One was missing his tail completey, an all the rest had it on there tails or fins.PLus it eventually spread to one of my cory's.Either way Marcyn II worked the best.I had to treat my whole tank. The qt was way out of the question.Follow the directions to the T and it will be fine.Make sure you remove any carbon in the filter before and during the treatment. The tail will take some time to grow back.My little guy with no tail took 3 monthes to grow back.Even without a tail he was fast enough to get away from any other fish in the tank.So good luck with him!!

I didn't take is as an insult either, fishfriend1. I took it as he had had a different experience as me and was expressing it. And nothing from silentcircuit's post was rude or anything like that.

this happened to me once. When i got my 5 albino corys, one of them had almost no fins at all. After a few days, we found the perfect name for him-Lucky. Now, i can barely tell him apart from the rest of the corys. Hes just as active, same size fins, only wat i can tell him apart is that he has extremely small pectoral fins. And recently, i came downstairs one morning to discover every single cory had 1 bitemark out of its dorsal fin, and they all had the same sized mark in the same place!!!

@silentcurcit, fishboss, User_name: Okay, sorry. Misunderstanding, and I have a tendency to overreact. WOrking on that one too...

okay, so it's probably fin rot, which means I'll need medicine for them. Would the tail grow back without medicine, I'm dead broke right now... literally, no money to spend, not a red cent... I could possibly rustle up $5, but I doubt that would be able to afford me the meds you recommended.

People love to trumpet water quality as the root of all evil even if fish show no signs of it but gourami love to attack large or bright fins and can easily tear apart smaller fish.

Your fish's fin will grow back a bit without meds, but will not heal completely. Whenever you can, you should get some meds.

I'll try to make some $$$ this week by mowing laws ($25 for my lawn, $50-75 for others lawns [these are big laws] gas is expensive). If I am able to afford it I should have some meds for the fish by the thursday (next) at the latest.

Again, thanks for all the help!
