I know the tetras eat their own eggs, so I was thinking about putting some sort of grating on the bottom of the tank so the eggs will fall out of the reach of the parents. Would this work? Would the male be able the fertilize the eggs that have fallen? Let me know what y'all think.

Danios have non-adhesive eggs. Tetra eggs are adhesive and won't fall between the marbles. A grating may work, but fine leaved plants are the traditional medium.

Could try using the light "grates" they use in suspended ceilings. They are an egg crate type pattern and make excellent diy dividers. Dont know why you couldnt use it horizontaly. I use suction cups that are .99$ for two from petco. Only thing I will buy there. the suction cups are used to hold airlines and stuff but work well for holding the dividers in.
