Black water/African Cichlids.

Thanks Paul...I will!!! I am so excited, I can't wait..it's been what like 2 months since I've had a tank!! OMG! Maybe I'll start a "tank progress" thread.:)

I was thinking if you don't go with the haps....you could get some bottom dwellers...A nice group of 5 Synodontis petricola would be nice or another type of Synodontis that don't get too big. Most of these guys are extremely active.

Hmmm, that would be cool I think. I wasn't sure what they were so I looked em up...they are nice looking, that would defiantly be a possibility...thanks!!

Haps generally do ok with Mbuna but Aulonocara don't. They are not fast enough and a lot of times will get out competed for food they are generally less aggressive. Yes you can do all those fish Coler suggested in a 55g....that is what makes a mbuna tank so nice.

Only thing I would add for clarity is that the haps you've picked out (Lady G that is) are Lake Victoria and are a ton more aggro than malawi haps, so probably will not have issues competing for food. I'd still not stock more than 1 or 2 male specimen in with the mbuna in the 55....but I know nowt about victorians.

Oh..what if I replaced the Hap with Aulonocara?

If you go with labs, acei, socolofi, rusties or similar you could try 3 or 4 male aulonocara instead of one of those four mbuna groups (i.e. do 3 out of 4 labs, acei, socolofi, rusties, and the male peacocks). Has a good chance of working out as you are sticking with some relatively unaggressive mbuna.

SOOOOO, there are Haps from Malawi? Would that be better to go with then? Which are they??

There are tons. www.cichlidforum.com - check out the species profiles. Great resource.

But, the malawi haps, in general, are gonna be a lil too meek with the mbuna, and those that are not are natural predators of mbuna at adult size. They also prefer a different aquascape - much more open swim space required as they are far far less flexible than mbuna, who really like to wriggle in and around the rockwork.

Ahhh, I see...well I'm not gonna even look cause I know I'll want them! LMAO...I better stick to looking at what I've already thought about. Thank you!

Oh, I wanted to ask..when you say "rusties" which are those?

rusties = iodotropheus sperengae....beauts, and right down there with the least aggro mbuna.
