I was browsing around at a local thrift store when I found a floro blacklight for a couple bucks. I thought it might be cool for my tank at night time, but it didnt do what I expected. When I turn it on, my water looks like a hazy cloud, like it hasnt been cleaned in moths. In other words, it stinks.

When it is on, cloudy as heck, when it is off, crystal clear. Does anyone know why? Is it just my tank? Or is water really cloudy all the time, and you just cant see it unless you use a blacklight? Or maybe blacklights show unseen organisms to the naked eye?

I know my tank is clean, but this dont make sense.

the blacklight is probably showing light suspended debris in the tank..could be highlighting a light algae bloom or a light bacterial bloom.

black light is used to detect many things including blood and urine

I dont think theres blood, so then if it highlights urine, there sure is a lot of it. If anyone has a black light, try it and see maybe it is just my tank. I was sort of hoping to see a fish glow in the dark, lol.

my opinion is that black light diffusses much easier though water than does natural light. If you look at deep ocean pics where the sunlight barely penitrates it always looks kinda merky....with the exception of a few places where the water is crystal clear. This is just my opinion...I've tried the black light deal and my tank always looked cloudy

i searched and found this post
Home Depot sells black lights that would fit my 55 but reading this i think it might look bad
any one use the blue marine lights for a FW tank i have been told that its good for watching nocturnal fish
i bought a blue lunar light but need to find a good place to put it seems kind of bright though
