I have a general question about cleaning a tank. I have tried to tell my dad that it is not a good idea to clean the tank completely, but I have failed in convincing him. He told me that he takes everything out of the tank, bleaches the tank along with the stuff in it, rinses it, then puts it all back in. He has a 5 gallon tank, and was like me and did not cycle his tank at first (I am currently doing a fishless cycle on my tank since all my fish died). When he first got the tank, he had alot of fish die, now I know why. Does anyone know of any online site that I can show him to let him know that it is not a good idea to do complete water changes and not a good idea to use bleach to clean the tank. He also doesn't believe me when I told him about cycling, and how you need the bacteria to take care of the ammonia. Any info you can give me would be greately appreciated, by me and the fish!!!

He has had this tank going for at least 8 months, and has only lost one fish in the last 4 months and that was his algae eater about a week ago. :sad

If your dad is really into technical stuff and that kind of thing, I really think The Skeptical Aquarist does a good job of analyzing a lot of material on different subjects. In particular, your dad should look into the Water and Nutrient Cycle sections. Tons of infomation presented in a way he can understand and with facts to back it up.
