blenny, goby, whos better

LOL... Right, one isn't going to eat all your snails and crabs in a week like a mantis, but you'll probably lose 1 or 2 every so often to a pistol shrimp.

I've watched a 2" long tiger pistol shrimp pick off snails and small hermits that were in its tank at the LFS. You could tell from his burrow that he was killing some of them for their shell and then used the shells in his burrow construction.

Is it possible that the pistol shrimp was desperate to form a burrow, thus he would do anything to get it... including kill animals unfortunate enough to be stuck in a tank with him? Could that be the fault of the LFS?

not really...all the shrimp wants with the shells is to build the den with...the snail or crab inside the shell is just a bonus for it really...A little midnight grazing perhaps...

i dont know if I want a mini killer in my tank.

pistol shrimps will attack things when stressed or when hungry. if u have a goby with them they are actually less likley to be stressed. that along with good feeding they will usually leave alone everything. they need fine grade sand though and coral or rock rubble to build their caves, also shells are sometimes used. as for the gobies u can use here is a link that give a general idea but some of the info is a bit off due to generalizations.

also blennies can have very interesting behavior and hide a lot less than gobies do. i used to have a tail spot blenny that would actually keep the aglae from growing on my gorgorian and he would sit in a tube and pop out every so often. also there are barnacle belnnies that will sit in holes(usually barnicles) and then they rapidly shoot out for food. when kept in groups they can be very interesting.
