Blind tetras are surprisingly good at navigating their surroundings. I have a few and they seem to have no trouble remembering the layout, although changes in decor do seem to cause them to bumb into things until they get used to it.
They do fine finding food, so long as tankmates don't offer too much competition.
All I know about tankmates is this: don't keep them with Synodontis lucipinnis! My synos are much too good at being eating machines, eating flake even from the surface of the water by swimming upside-down. I suspect the tetras would stand a bit better luck with slightly less boisterous tankmates. I don't have any personal experience with the other suggestions, but they sound ok from what I do know about them.
