Blind Molly?

Man I have lots of questions tonight! Yay Aquaria Central for being so helpful!
Anyway, I just transferred my tanks (29g to 46 g bowfront) last night. Kept the same decor, water and plants; running the old filter in addition to the new one. Water parameters are perfect- no problems so far.

I noticed this morning my single balloon molly was sitting on the bottom, prompting me to immediately test the water (normal) and I also had it double checked at the LFS this afternoon (also normal). He isn't breathing funny, acting weird, etc. Just sitting there. I figured it was just stress. But as I watch him, he has no problem swimming around when food is put in the tank. But he only swims along the edges, and seems to bump into the end of the tank before swimming to the top, and there, it's like he waits for the food to come to him- he doesn't go after a certain piece like the others do. After thinking about this, a lot of other behaviors make sense- after his buddy died a month ago, he started hanging out in the top corner of the tank a lot. He was also the first to be caught when I was moving fish last night, and he doesn't appear to really notice the net in front of him now until it's really close. He's been acting odd around the plants now- he is swimming through them rather than around. Also, my husband thinks that his eyes look different- greenish and cloudy where they weren't really visible before (he's solid black).

I like this little guy and would like to keep him around. I am worried that the stress of the new tank and set up (I was going to add plants and slate tomorrow) plus new inhabitants over the next few weeks might be overly stressful if he is indeed blind. I have a 5 gallon that I could get set up for him if it would be better for him to be isolated.

So what do you guys think? Is this possible and if so what should I do for him? Sorry for the long post- hope it helps! THanks

Maybe it is better if you isolate him in that 5 gallon tank. If you could handle that, it would be like special service to one fish lol. It might be better for him.

Ok I will try to get that set up for him. He seems to be doing ok, but I am worried about him getting enough to eat- by the time he figures out there is food in the tank and makes his way to the top, the rainbows have devoured it all.

Do you think if I use the same gravel, plants and water from the tank he is in for the 5 gallon that will be sufficient and won't cycle on him? That tank has an undergravel filter so I can't reuse media, and I'll be setting it up from scratch.

I dont have mollies - so that that into consideration.

Every time I move fish from tank to tank - there is no problem - even for the social ones. I know from experience some fish like "smaller" tanks because it is what they are used to.

I did have one Black Skirt Tetra that was the last of its type in a tank and decided to move it a bigger tank (unfortunately with no BST). He seemed to lull around but perked up on food time (he liked to eat).

A 5g could help if he feels dwarfed by the new tank - but I wish the best for you.
