hi
i have this awsome pleco...
how can i encourage my pleco to come out of his hiding spot...
every time i hav a look at the tank, he's always under his rock, even at night wen i just shine a torch he's under his rock... im worried that he's not getting any food.
will he eventuraly wonder around looking for food??
the first day i got him, he darted around like crazy at super speed...
just wondering is that normal?? or was he just stressed?? n when he was up on the glass, he seemed to be breathing really fast...
just wana kno if he'll be ok

Mine is the same! I have an awesome blue phantom pleco, my dream fish, since I only see it in my dreams. lol It loves HBH super soft food, if I stand in the other room and peak around the corner I can see it come out when I drop the super soft food in the tank.

I never see my clown either.

not sure you can change the habits of a nocturnal creature. I'm sure he's coming out in the dark, but trust me, he sees you coming at the tank in the dark room, so by the time you get the flashlight on the tank......he's long gone! I have a breeding pair of bristlenose in a 30 gallon nearby my bed. Sometimes i'll just lie down on the bed for several minutes (tricking the little devils into thinking i'm gone...they don't see any room movement anymore) and then I get a good look and observation of them! If all else fails, you may have to wear a disguise so he doesn't recognize you! :grinyes: :grinyes: :grinyes:

I have a shy "scribble" plec that I only see when I put a small (salad type) shrimp in the veggie clip. He can't resist even at the front of the tank with me watching & the clip keeps him from just grabbing & running.

I don't think he mean't the pleco was bleeding literally he meant the pleco is just being stupid!

My pleco is the same way, I am worried about him he'll some wood chew on in the new tank soon enough, but he never eats the food I give. Now algae wafers which btw I am worried about them affecting my water params. They break down so quickly and my stupid fish eat them instead of the pleco!

Sounds pretty normal nocturnal behavior. Although, you didn't mention how many hiding spots are available. If it's just the one spot, add a few more. Shy fish are often seen more when they feel safe - which is when there are plenty of hides nearby.

thanks guys for the reply
gave me a bit of reassurance...

Mine (common plec) usually hid under his rock when in a 30G. Moved him and the GF (and his same rock house!!)to a 75G and he's move lively, even with lights on.. Clip a bit of zucchini or cucumber to the tank and he's on it in a few minutes...lights or not...

My BN pleco isn't shy at all, thankfully. I know the behavior you speak of though, because my mom's pleco is really shy like that. As mentioned, it could help if he has more hiding places. There are lots of spots to hide in my tank, which may be why mine is around and about during the day. He is alot more active at night, but he's not shy and doesn't mind me being nearby... he doesn't even hide during tank maintenance.
