To my amusement I noticed a bloom on my Italian Val today. Probably a common thing but I was excited about it. Thought I would share it with you guys! Hope the pic is ok!

That bloom looks awfully like Saggitaria to me, not so much like Val, ditto the stem that produced it. You may want to look into clarifying the ID. But it is a good shot, and comforting that your plant is "happy" enough to flower.

RTR,
Take a look at these pics. It certainly would not be the first mistaken plant ID for me. It does behave like val and produces a massive amount of runners. Thanks for the help!

I can't give you the differentiations between the leaf and tip anatomy of Val and Sag, but there are some. The giveaway is the great diference in their flowers - Val is all but petal-less, Sag is actually an attractive small flower (some hardy emergent forms are even showier). Val has single "blooms" per spike, Sag spikes divide/branch and produce a continuing series of individual flowers over an extended period.

I use some deep subtrates without issues - in heavily planted tanks, depending in part on the plants used, it is not so much of an issue. The roots of Val and Sag and Crypts and some others tend to be multiple, long, and vertical. Deep substrates will allow for healthy strong stands of these plants.

More blooms noted today with the flower coming up out of the water. The petals are white as you can see in the pic with a yellow center. I guess its Sag. Oh well, it looks good!

The tank is almost 1.5 years old and I have never had any serious issues with it. I like the deep substrate. The plants are strong and healthy and the fish are happy. I should post an updated pic of the entire tank since it has evolved alot over the past months.
