yea ill be seeing my friend a few more times before we move into our new place in a week so when i see him ill take a picture of it and post it.... till then i guess ill just read up on more general info on sunfish

I do belive there are 34 species of sunfish. I see you live in minnesota. Here is a list of species from the closest state I can find to you Iowa. Look at the different pages and pics and you may be able to find out what kind you have.

Bluegill is one of many sunfish in north america on theast side of the rockys. Bluegill will get up to about 12-15'' as an adult. They are messy fish and should only be put with fish in the same family as them. Other fish that are similar cousins of them are Pumpkin seed, warmouth, green sunfish, red ear, and rock bass. Stripe bass, Crappie, Largemouth, and Smallmouth bass are also in the sunfish family but get considerably larger. Most of the other Sunfish that i mentioned in the first list, only get to about 8-10 inches as an adult. 50 Gallons is the bear minimum to put one of these fish in. The larger bluegill need a 75 gallon to live singly or with a single mate.

Yep, there is only one species of bluegill, but there are several color morphs. The different color morphs live in different places. They all grow to the same size, eat the same food, ect. and are way too big for a 30 gallon. They need to be cared for basically the same as oscars.

Most of them grow to around 12-15 inches, but I have caught several that were bigger, including an 18 inch bluegill that weighed 3 pounds. One of my favorite bait shops has a 2 footer stuffed on the wall. That is probably an extremely rare fish, but beware.

hhhmmmm... well ill tell him to invest in another 55g if he wants to keep it (which he probably will want to keep because he likes it alot) because i cant cough up the money for another big tank right now....

yeah it could be any type of sun fish. Bluegills look like redear sunfish, pumpkinseed, many others....

moved him into a bigger tank the second i moved heres a picture of it..... any ideas what kind of blue gill it is? its in a 65g tank now (craigslist rules!:) )i was wondering if i could add more bluegills or a bottom feeder? id rather have a bottom feeder cause this little guy is a very messy eater
