blue or black background?

I'm going to suggest neither, or a contrast. :)

I've used blue background with black substrate, and I really didn't like the way it looked. Too much like an LFS tank, and it didn't do it for me at all.

I've also used black backgrounds. They look nice in planted tanks where the plants cover most of the background, but black substrate and backgrounds will make a lot of fish go dark.

I used to support the advice that they make fish more vibrant but not anymore. I believe a compromise is best, black substrate with no background (white wall) looks REALLY nice to me.

So do black backgrounds with light substrates like white/beige sand. (see my avatar for an example)

When you have a combo such as those, that's when I've seen amazing contrast and color in my fish. (quality food and clean water play a heavy role as well, of course).

well my wall behind my aquarium is brown so should i flip it over so the background is blue because i want my apistos to be colorful and my substrate is black because it is eco-complete

You should try both sides, and then you can make the decision personally, based on what's more aesthetically pleasing to you.

I'm interested in seeing what it looks like with the brown wall. That would have a cool look; unique too. Sometimes, you have to go against the conventional ideas and come up with your own, and you'll be very happy with your aquarium at that point, because it then truly becomes 'your tank'.

With the 20g L I recently setup, I decided to try something different, so instead of placing the tank against the wall length wise and adding a background, I only put one end against the wall. This way, I'm able to view 'through' the tank, and see it from both sides, I'm extremely happy with it.

I did have to take care to make sure I had areas where the puffers could go and not be seen and it turns out this is my favorite setup of all from over the years I've been into aquaria. :)

I bought a background. after taping it to the outside i noticed that its too dull. and then i added water between the glass wall and the background. NOW it looked amazing and gives a 3 d effect.
Everyone loves it. I was wondering wht other than water can i use.Well, cuz the water evaporates soon and i have to keep adding more and lots of it spills out on the floor or on the wooden stand.
Any ideas ?

Black for me too. Makes the background disappear complete which gives a greater illusion of depth. Blue backgrounds don't do that, and yes start to look more like LFS or breeder tanks. Blue backgrounds can also throw the color balance off with many cameras and the plants look darker blackish green than the natural color green they really are.

Vaseline should do the same thing.

blue or black background. I have black substrate and lots of drift wood and river rocks?

I greatly prefer black, but it's really a matter of taste. :werd:
