With a lot of Fish

Hey guys,

Last night I went to walmart and found a tank of pretty decent looking Blue & Pink Kissing Gouramis for $1.84 each. I could get under $5.00 a peice at my LFS, petsmart and petco for the same fish. Any ideas about what's up? I could almost by these from Walmart and sell them to the LFS and make a few bucks. Have you seen these prices at any other walmarts?

The fish looked decent a little young (2 inches) and not much color. Just wanted to let you guys know in case any of you were looking to get some gouramis at rock bottom prices.

Hmm.. Wallyworld fishies.

I've been to see the fish in my local Walmart, and heard most everyone else say the same thing: Expect the fish to be sick in some way. If you have that in mind up front, and quarantine appropriately, I would think it could be worth it. I personally won't buy fish from Walmart, but I do occaisonally buy supplies from them. (When I'm in the store and happen to need some fish type supply and when it is cheaper than some other place.)

Yeah, I can relate to that as well... although just because I wish Wal-Mart’s pet 'section' would go out of business, I often refuse to buy any fish-related supplies from them. Remember that the reason their prices on fish are so cheap is probably because of their reputation and the fact that so many people bring back dead fish and demand a refund. I have seen their fish prices lower drastically over the years. I remember when Wal-Mart had fish over $10-15 dollars. Now it seems like all their fish are under 8 dollars. An 8-dollar fish at Wal-Mart would be considered "expensive". :)

The only thing I buy at Wal-Mart is goast shrimp because they are the only people in my town that regulary get them. Plus at 20 cents a piece by far the cheapest.

I purchased a blue gourami and a pleco from Walmart and had no problems at all. Both are now over a year old, happy, and healthy (the pleco is growing into a monster). Maybe it was beginner's luck, maybe not. Just be careful which ones you pick out is the best advice I can give.

The blue and pink kissing gourami are also probably dyed or painted (I'm assuming, so correct me if I am wrong)... they probably won't live long....just another reason not to get them.

That's what I thought at first, Puma, but then I reread it and thought, maybe they are talking about blue gouramis *and* pink kissing gouramis (as in two different species rather than two different colours of the same one)
