Blue & Pink Gouramis at Walmart for $1.84 Each

I got a pair of blue gouramis for three bucks at petsmart, and both for three apiece, and within a week(one in three days, the other in six), both were dead of dropsy... from what I understand it's common in gouramis... But in a proper tank where no other fish have a problem- it kinda irked me that both would kick off like that.

one reason I refuse to buy from PetSmart again...

The wal-mart near me doesn't sell test kits of any sort, but they have all sorts of medications. oh and they have 2 takns of oscars. The largest aquarium they sell is 10 gallons

Walmart sells their fish cheaper by making insane deals with distributers. That is the way they sell all of their products for so cheap. If you want to sell to WalMart then you do it on their terms. And that is fine and a great way to run their business. Unfortunatly like most places that sell fish cheaply they also do not staff appropriate people to deal with them. In one WalMart near me it was the lady that sells paint that dealt with the fish and she had no idea. Back then I bought 5 white clouds and 3 cory catfish from them and 2 years later they are still doing well, but I won't be heading back there any time soon.

I hope your gouramis do very well also. Take good care of them and realize that they do get very big (they don't really mention that at WalMart either). And also make sure to get them some veggies as well, gouramis love veggies.

I was at my local super wally center the other week. THey had actually a very nice assortment of very healthy looking fish.
I went back this weekend to purchase a few, as they looked better than some at my LFS's.

Well, it seems disaster struck :(

Someone had poured some chemical into the water system there, and killed very last fish :(

By the time I got there all the tanks were empty :(
I am going to stop by on my way home today and see if they are up and running again.

Like many fish stores that is a major problem. A central sump system that means all tanks are connected. Therefore if one tank is sick, they all are.

I used to laugh when I would see a sign that said, this tank is being treated these fish are not for sale, but the ones on the top of it were for sale (though they used the same water!?).
