Hello,

I'm interested in getting a pair of blue rams for my 20 gallon aquarium in the near future. I've been doing quite a bit of research on them and have found conflicting information. For example, I've heard that they breed very easily and also that they are very difficult to breed. Which is it? I really don't want to deal with fish that will breed easily. Especially since I've read they will have up to 100 eggs.

I'd appreciate any and all information that can be given about this species. Also, any fish that are similar in size and personality that are interesting to keep.

Thanks!
Laura

from what i have read they are on the easy side. when i get conflicting information i just assume that its one of those fish that have different personalities. other interesting fish to keep would be shellies. if u wanted to breed rams, i would get a different tank for them because shellies can be territorial and could disturb them. go to www.cichlid-forum.com to get more information. u could get some more information off of google to.

In general rams are not only pretty difficult to breed, but also are horrible parents. In the past few years I have bread several pairs of rams with my only successful try coming just a few days ago. In all of the other cases the parents either ate the fry or or stopped guarding them and let other fish eat them. The key to breeding them is feeding good foods (frozen or live), a clean tank and peat moss in the filter to lower the ph and gives off trace element that induce breeding. If you do this chances are they will at least breed and if you're lucky they'll actually take care of the brood.
