Whats the difference? name or actually different fish?

Yupp, same fish, different name. They are also called butterfly cichlids, butterfly rams, and german rams.

Ive been looking around and I dont typically see the same strong colors in the "Blue Ram" that I do in the "German Blue Ram". Might just be one fish to the next or diet, but when I search for the german variety it has stronger colors than the reg. blue. Just my observation.

Most blue rams are Asian bred nowadays anyways but still carry the trade name "German" blue ram. I wouldn't put any stock into the name without knowing the actual origin of the fish. The blue trait was originally bred by the Germans (among other Europeans) which is where the name came from in the first place.

So a juvenile

How can I be sure that the juvenile fish I purchase will gain color as it grows older? I assume that most fish gain thier colors as they age.

They are great fish! Treat them just like one would keep discus and you'll have some great ones! If you can find some from a local breeder that would be best as they are really touchy fish when imported due to being treated with hormones, stress etc.,

There is a mom and pop shop I found that has some, they came in today, but I am not sure my tank is ready for them since I am still dealing with ammo. Cycle isnt complete.

German Rams are a manmade variety of M. ramirezi. Think of the difference between a Red Wag Sword and an unmolested Xiphophorus helleri. I know the analogy isn't perfect due to hybridization of aquarium strains of Livebearers but it gets the idea across.
