I think one of my beloved Blue Rams has dropsy

I noticed yesterday that one of the little gals was really bloated looking and her scales were starting to stick out a little. Her eyes look like they are bulging too and a bit cloudy... I do not yet have an isolation tank so I at least separated her into a breeding trap.

Should I euthenize? From what I have read, there's little chance a fish can recover from this even with antibiotic treatment... what do you think?

Sorry I can't help you, but I just had to say I LOVE the tank in your avatar! WOW! I can say though if you cant isolate your fish while treating all your fish could be affected by the medicine. Good luck with your fish!

Thanks for the compliment :) That pic was taken before there was anything (not even water) in it, I should update!

I haven't started any treatment and I'm hesitant to do so. I've read that once the fish is bloated and has "pinecone" scales, it's generally too late anyway - is this true? I don't want to kill off all the bacteria that have just taken hold since it's a newer setup - I know I probably shouldn't have rams in there yet but...

You're right...from what I understand dropsy is almost impossible to treat. And I believe it is contagious, so I would make a decision soon... Either euthanize or if you wanted to try and treat you might be able to float a large tupperware container (to keep the temp. up) and just change the water often. It might work to try and treat that way without a QT tank

The 2 times I've had a run-in with dropsy it was too late for the fishes even with treatment, so I'd say that what you've read is pretty accurate.
